The Science 

During the digestive process, the body produces enzymes to break down nutrients into molecules small enough for the body to absorb and use for metabolism of energy, growth and cell repair. The bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract also plays a role in digestion and nutrient absorption. 

The body needs adequate amounts of digestive enzymes to break down food. Digestive enzyme production naturally declines with age, but factors such as the standard Western diet also exert an influence.
