Why Post-Meal Spikes Matter

A continuous glucose monitor, or CGM, is a small, painless sensor worn on the back of the upper arm. It reads your glucose continuously and sends it to your phone, so instead of one number once a year, you see a live curve of how your body responds to every meal, every night of sleep, every walk, and every stressful afternoon.

That difference is not just interesting. It appears to be meaningful for how we age. When blood sugar spikes repeatedly, it accelerates a chemical processe called glycation, in which sugar molecules attach to proteins and fats in the body and form compounds known as advanced glycation end products, or AGEs. AGEs are linked to stiffer arteries, aging skin, and low-grade inflammation. In other words, the pattern of your daily glucose is one window into the pace of your own aging.

Swings in blood sugar also cause oxidative stress. Both glucose and fat fluctuations in the blood stream have been associated with the development of cellular senescence, so-called zombie cells, which stop functioning and propagate inflammation.

What the Latest Research Shows

Two recent studies bring this into focus.

The first looked at people who lived to 100. In a continuous glucose study of centenarians published in Frontiers in Nutrition in 2022, researchers found that average glucose, fasting glucose, and post-meal glucose were all significantly lower and steadier in those who reached extreme old age than in younger adults. Higher glucose levels were associated with lower odds of achieving that exceptional longevity. Steadier blood sugar, it turns out, tends to travel with a longer life.

The second study looked at the brain. In 2026, researchers using data from more than 350,000 people in the UK Biobank reported that genetically higher post-meal glucose was linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease, a connection that did not appear with fasting glucose alone. This is early work, and the finding still needs to be confirmed in further research, but it reinforces a theme that keeps recurring: the after-meal numbers, the ones a fasting test never sees, may carry real information about the health of the brain and body over time.

The through-line of both studies is simple. Fasting numbers miss the spikes. A CGM lets you see them.
